Hello there. It been some time after my last post. I was busy with my classes and my normal job, so I’m sorry for that. Now with my new laptop I can begin…finishing my college! Finally! After that, I will focus my free time to make, upgrade and play games. Awesome.
3 weeks ago was the Global Game Jam 2013, a jam where game developers from all around the world stay together in places and make games in 48 hours. I was there, in Lima Game Jam, a place of Global Game Jam. Unfortunately, I could actually take part of it since Saturday night, 18 hours before time ends. And even worse, my only option was to make a solo team.
But even so, I made my game! And when I show them to all the participants, they were like “Oh my god!! Ohhhhhh!!!!” hahaha xD. The best part was when some of them tell me that they like my game. So I could say that I feel so proud of myself. Even against the odds, I can make games. That’s a great encouragement.
Now, my new game is called “Stay Healthy“, a top down shooter where the idea is to stay alive the longest time possible and make the best highscore. I made it with Game Maker: Studio. I got it on Christmas deals. Soon I will update the “Games” list adding the game in there, so wait for it.
Also, I am doing a challenge. A One Game A Month is about….making a game each month for 1 year at least. Without fail. It’s interesting. I have one game in January. And as you have guess is Stay Healthy. Now I need 11 more to go.
Well, that’s all for now. See you soon.
Happy Christmas…is what I have to say…lately.
Hello there. Just passing to tell you that the world didn’t end!! But my laptop has died. Yes, it sucks. At November end, 3 weeks after I got a new HDD, the motherboard collapsed. Since then, I have made almost nothing, so there is no news about my games. But the hard drive is alive, so I can retrieve my data. There is no problem in that. But it sucks anyway.
Because of it, I couldn’t be part of Ludum Dare #25. It sucks even more knowing the awesome games being made there and no chances to making games. But don’t mind that and check it if you want to play them. Here is the site: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/.
Also next week I will finally get a new laptop. Thank god. I finally can play and make games!! I can’t wait for it hahaha!! So very soon I will update my games. And be part for the Global Game Jam, on January 25 – 27, 2013. The site is here: http://globalgamejam.org/
See you soon. Also, happy new year!! I hope for your success and happiness.
Sorry for post really late. Right now I have some issues with my laptop. My HDD died, so I need a replacement. Fortunately, I have enough money to do that. In no time I will be back in action.
Some news from my part: Since some weeks ago (before my laptop’s issues), I began to post and publish all my free games on Game Jolt. It’s an amazing site and a lovely community behind it. Until now I publish Hoperay on it, but soon I will release the other ones in there.
So I decided to update my games to a new level. Graphics, mechanics, music, etc. All will be new with the idea to give quality games to the gamers. It will take weeks, but I will try to do it as fast as I could.
Also, between November 9th-17th will be a jam called Fuck This Jam. The theme is to make a game with your most hated genre. Cool, right? You can go to the site clicking right here.
Enjoy your Halloween!
Hello! I was busy with studies and stuff, so I didn’t do some progress on my game projects.
Some hours ago Ludum Dare #24 has ended, with 1404 entries between Compo and Jam Session based on the “Evolution” theme. I take part of it, but unfortunately I wasn’t in time to end it. You can check the games made on it clicking on this link: Ludum Dare #24 Entries. Congratulations to all of them!
Now I will take my time to end the game I was working for Ludum Dare as a practice. I don’t think it will take much time. It is about a “human alphabet”, identifying the letter showed by a human silhouette and pressing the right button as fast as you could. Very simple and, maybe, educational.
Yesterday was the II Games Devs Peru Meeting, beginning with the announcement of the creation of IGDA chapter here in Peru. That’s cool, it will help the game industry, not only in Peru, also in Latin America. This is the official webpage: http://igda.pe/
But something special happens in that meeting. I was part of the expositor team!! It was awesome! My theme was about Game Maker. Explaining to the audience in a way so fluid and easy to do. I was amazing by myself. I like it! And if I have the change to do it again, I will.
And another thing: I am still designing “Project Threats”, but I will focus in an event for now. “A Game By Its Cover” (AGBIC) is an independent game development competition where you make a game based on a fictional game artwork. Here is the official website: http://www.agbic.com/. I hope to make a better game this time
EDIT: And have a happy Father’s Day!!
Last week I was focused in enemies ideas to my game “Project Threats”. Until now I have 10 enemies (or “threats”), but is not enough. I know that I have to “think small” to make this game a reality (around 90% of games in development ended unfinished for make it “too big”), but to make it more enjoyable and with replay value, I will need more of them.
So I was thinking to make some “game modes”. Until now I have two modes: Arcade Mode and Select Mode. The first mode is the basic one. Will be in stages with continues. Until now will be 7 stages (still not confirmed) and the last one will be the same: the hardest threat I create . The second mode will be available after you make it to the 2nd stage of the Arcade Mode and only will be playable those threats you have beat before. That means that you must defeat them in Arcade Mode, if you are lucky to fight them in there
Maybe I will add another mode if it’s interesting and I have the time to do it.
Now, I will focus in finish the game design and go to development. I promise to show some screenshots during development time, so stay alert.
The Ludum Dare #23 results are up! 1402 games made between 48 and 72 hours, where my game Hoperay competed. Even if i didn’t won, i did a great job by myself. At least, my game was fun (was 107th place in Fun Category)
Here we can check the Top results:
Congratulations to everybody!
First of all, I want to give greetings to all the mothers in the Earth because is their day, they deserve it……even if they torment our lives, but it’s always for a good cause
Hello, everyone. Right now I’m in the design phase of my game, called in codename “Project Threats“, and I’m having a good progress with it:
- The score system, for example, will be based in 2 things: Chain combos and stages bonuses. Both of them prizes the player for his effort, always hitting the enemy and for being fast and invincible (it’s a way to say it ).
- About the ships, I was thinking to make two types of them. But because in a “shmup” the score is essential, this will create a favoritism to one of them. So, I decide to fuse them and make a ship with 2 shot modes: one is a good range machine gun and the other is a powerful laser. Both of them with his own special attack as the classic “bomb”. And of course, with their respective upgrades.
Right now, I’m designing the enemies and they will be very mixed, taking another ideas from other games and stuff. I want them to be difficult to kill, so I will take care of them like treasures.
Soon, more info
Hello, guys. Just today I want to tell you a couple of things:
Project “Threats” is the code name of my first complete game that been developing since last week. It’s based of my last game I made in Ludum Dare, Hoperay, posted in the Games page. The synopsis is like this: “The Earth has been attacked by a series of “threats”, in general. And your newly created spacecraft is there to destroy them before they reach your planet”.
The game is a retro top-down perspective “shmup“, controlling a spacecraft and fighting against a lone enemy or a group of them. Will be for 1 or 2 players with upgrade capabilities and in a single hard difficulty. His principal features are as follows:
- Different Threats: You will fight against different kinds of enemies in different stages: From lone entities (as aliens, monsters or robots) to a legion of different races (could be against a rebellion of humans… maybe…)
- Random Stage Sequence: That means that in one gameplay session, an enemy who appears in stage 01, could appear, in another gameplay, in another stage. And this will happen with all the threads. This will create a many different sequences of stages every time you play it.
Time Limit: You will have a time limit before the enemy reach your planet or their “objective”. If you don’t defeat it in time, you are doomed. Simple as that.Forget about that xD
The game, for now, has not release date and no official name yet. I will take care of it later.
See you soon.
Hello, I’m Diego del Solar, a.k.a. “Shackhal“, and this is Shack Lab, a place where i will post my adventures and creations about indie games (and another things :D). I will tell you a story about myself. After all, it’s my first post (literally, the auto-created post doesn’t count xD):
I always like videogames since i was a child, playing on those old PCs with games like Grand Prix Circuit, Altered Beast, DOOM, etc. And on SNES too (i still have the console :D), with Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Megaman X, Top Gear, etc. I remember that I made maps of those games and another original ones. Like 40 or 50 maps i created. Those were good times…but after that, i didn’t feel that passion again…
…Until last year.
February, 2011. That day, i was surfing the Internet, like everyday, searching for something that interested me, at least for some time. Until i found some games. No those called AAA games, another ones. Those called “Indie Games“.
So i play them. I found them amazing, even if their graphics or music not were too awesome. But still, together with their other elements, they make magic. That’s right, magic. That word that can transform an adult to a child again. So i take an interest for this “little world” and made my research.
The investigation was quick because they weren’t too hide. Wikipedia, YouTube, dedicated webpages (like Bytejacker, IndieGames.com – The Weblog, TIGSource, etc.) and more inform me about his meaning, his difference with AAA games and his events. I was amazed. Why i didn’t find this before? Here, in Peru, there was no chance before to study or work out as a game developer. Thanks to them, i can become a game developer!
So i begun. 10 months ago, I downloaded a software called Game Maker, where i can make 2D games and include his own language, GML (Game Maker Language). I downloaded it for Spelunky, a indie game made by Derek Yu with the same program (You have to play it, the original version is free!). One month after, i bought the program. I’m still learning from it. It’s the same case with another software, like PxTone and GIMP.
And until now, i has made 3 games: Balls Can Hurt You, Walls of Boom and Hoperay. You can find those games in the “Games” page, in the menu. But the last one was the first reason why i create this blog. I want to continue with it and create a complete game, with more features and more awesomeness. And i want to post my development in this one and another ones that don’t exist for now, but it will pop in my head. Like magic.
By the way, right now in Peru, we has begun a revolution in the game industry of my country, creating a Facebook group where we make meetings, events and interact between us. Hopefully, with this we can plant seeds to the future.
Thanks for reading it xD
